This past year we've watched SPAM reach unprecedented levels. Postini recently reported the last major increase in SPAM brought with it a wave of Fraud and identity theft. About this time two years ago InformationWeek reported that SPAM world wide would cost businesses $50 Billion a year, and American businesses would account for $17 Billion of that loss.
During early November of 06 I started receiving alerts from Postini like this one:

Postini has adapted to the SPAM increase, as it is reporting more SPAM than ever and yet these warnings are coming fewer and farther apart.
I ran this report on incoming SPAM from the past month, it shows a tremendous amount of SPAM for 115 accounts:

That's right from Jan 2 to Feb 2 there were 87,267 SPAM email blocked. On the low days we had as little as 62% being blocked and on the high days 87%. With an average of 78.7% of all incoming email being SPAM.
Using these numbers I was able to use a couple of the SPAM calculators on the web to determine that we are saving approximately $20,000 per year by using a service to wash SPAM.
Although you read about SPAMMERS going to jail, it is not enough to slow the increase of SPAM. Until those who benefit from SPAM can become a target for litigation then SPAM will continue. When companies who pay for clicks and don't require reporting or when they pay for SPAM outright they need to become liable for it.
