Here are some modifications I make to optimize my connection when using Terminal Services Manager: disable Active Desktop and reduce the connections that are created by default (like network printers). You do that by going to Start -> Run on the computer you have connected to, type in tsmmc.msc and go to Properties of RDP-Tcp. Under client settings you can specify NOT using client settings. I also disable all mappings except clipboard mappings. You turn off Active Desktop Under the Server Settings section. Particularly for patching, I really prefer the Terminal Services connection over RDP.
